A Critique of Rene Girard’s Mimetic Theory

Rene Girard’s Mimetic Theory is situated on a false premise suggesting pursuits of power are propelled by man’s hardwired nature to gravitate toward compartmentalized psychologies of denial foment into “exclusivist cultural doctrines” of society. Is man by nature inclined to withhold his treasures from those outside his tribal kin by sheer virtue of his all too human nature?

Interestingly, a parallel can be drawn here on the comparative correlation of man’s fixation on cornering absolute truth with absolute power when the inherent fallibility of human nature mutually cancels both absolutely when combined to inspire a uniform sociological statement.

This is most observable when such correlations can be observed as super philosophies turned supra-maxims of sociocultural thinking when manifested in those great watershed moments of history. The psychology of denying access to outsiders is premised on a greater sociology of collective otherization best characterized as the might is right rule.

What came first? Society or civilization? As societies inspire paradigms for civilization, is phenomena like the ancient wonders of the world measured by projections of hard power when consulting Girard’s predeterminism of human sociology as premised on denying greatness turned evolutionary superiority to others? Did the Ancient Egyptians build the great pyramids to deny lesser civilizations the right to do likewise on equal footing in their own time, space, & place?

Is it therefore farfetched to suggest the sociocultural motivations for erecting pyramids in Ancient Egypt where fundamentally different when compared to the motivations of the Ancient Mayans considering the emergence of both “civilizational wonders” occurred in complete isolation of each other during drastically different times at vastly different places? Were the Mayans merely fixated on mimicking the achievements of Ancient Egypt?

How is one to explain intellectual revolutions such as the renaissance which inspired Europe’s Republic of Letters? In the end, currencies of undisputable turned irrefutable truth shatter the materialism of power & the power of materialism anywhere, any time, anyplace forging the most unlikely of civilizational convergences as seen throughout human history.
